      <image:title>Liberatore Bio - Albert M. Liberatore, STD, PhD</image:title>
<image:caption>Albert M. Liberatore holds a doctorate in Theology from the Katholieke Universiteit te Leuven in Belgium, where he studied Karl Rahner’s unique theory of symbolization as a way into understanding the nature of doctrinal truth. As a part of his doctoral work, he completed a comprehensive bibliographical guide to Rahner’s 23-volume Theological Investigations and he published a new English translation of some of Rahner’s key German theological terms. Over the course of more than eight years in Belgium, prior to earning his doctorate he also studied graduate-level Philosophy at Leuven’s Hoger Instituut voor Wijsbegeerte, and then he completed a BA and an MA in Religious Studies along with a pontifical baccalaureate degree in Theology before going on to earn a licentiate degree in Sacramental Theology with a study of how catechumens engaged in the process of Christian conversion contribute to the self-enactment of the Church. In the United States, Dr. Liberatore held the St. Pius X Chair of Theology at the University of Scranton, where he taught undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in Systematic Theology and directed graduate theses. He has also taught in the Theology department at Miseracordia University in Dallas, PA, served as Academic Dean of St. Pius X Seminary in Dalton, PA, and worked as managing editor for several editorial agencies based in the United States and Australia. First as a seminarian, then as a priest, and finally as Vocation Director of the Diocese of Scranton, Dr. Liberatore spent seventeen years living and working in seminaries, giving him an insider’s view of the strengths and weakness of the screening of candidates for priesthood as well as the process of seminary formation. When his own involvement in the abuse crisis resulted in his laicization, he spent the next decade and a half in an intense and personal examination of the ways that psychosexual immaturity, cognitive distortions, and clerical culture contribute to the dynamics that can lead to sexual abuse by Catholic clergy. It was this experience, more than any other, that developed in him a passion for rooting out the causes of the sexual abuse crisis that has harmed countless people’s lives and wreaked such havoc on the Church and society. During this latter period, Dr. Liberatore also engaged in an ongoing discussion of the clergy sexual abuse crisis with his friend and mentor, theologian Avery Cardinal Dulles, SJ. It was Cardinal Dulles who encouraged Dr. Liberatore to put his personal experience of the abuse crisis, coupled with his theological background, at the service of the Church. When contacted by Opus Bono Sacerdotii President Joseph Maher in 2017, Dr. Liberatore joined him in co-founding the Dulles Research Institute as a way to contribute to the prevention of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church through independent, scholarly research, dialogue, and publication aimed at uncovering the causes of the abuse crisis and working for a healthier future for Catholic priests.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sample Bio - Lisa L. Sample, PhD</image:title>
<image:caption>Lisa L. Sample earned her PhD in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She currently serves as the Reynolds Professor of Public Affairs and Community Service in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Her principal area of expertise is in policy analysis and program evaluation. For almost 20 years, Dr. Sample’s research has been focused in the area of sex offense policy. She currently serves as President of the Sex Offense Policy Research workgroup, which is affiliated with the American Society of Criminology. She has used both quantitative and qualitative data to investigate sex offending, offenders, and the law. In these investigations she has conducted sex offending recidivism studies as well as research on sex offense policy outcomes and on public opinion regarding sex offense policy. Most recently, Dr. Sample's work has focused on the consequences of living under sex offense laws in the community. Her forthcoming book, Living Under Sex Offense Laws: The Consequences for Offenders and their Families, shares the findings of her interviews with registrants, their partners/spouses, and their adult children concerning the effects that public registration, residency restrictions, and civil commitment have on their social, political, and psychological wellbeing. Her other published works can be found in journals such as Criminology and Public Policy, Criminal Justice Policy Review, Journal of Crime and Justice, International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology, among others. Dr. Sample is an applied and practical researcher who always has an eye on improving policy and programming for marginalized groups. Since 2007, she has been interviewing registered citizens who are in the community post-sanction or during their punishments. Those interview data culminated in the creation of Fearless, the first non-therapeutic peer-to-peer support group for registrants, their wives/partners, their parents and siblings, and their adult children. Fearless brings together groups of individuals with similar hardships and successes every month, so they can obtain peer advice, social support, and accountability. There are currently two branches of Fearless in Nebraska, with hopes of more to come across the country. Dr. Sample has been the editorial assistant to the editor of Criminology, the top-ranked journal in her field. She has reviewed manuscripts for publication in academic and trade journals, along with book proposals for publishing companies and grant proposals for nonprofit organizations such as the Guggenheim Foundation, as well as for government agencies like the National Institute of Justice. She has extensive experience working with graduate students from many fields, she regularly supervises students on research projects, and she has grant management and contract work experience. Dr. Sample brings to her work at the Dulles Research Institute an interdisciplinary approach to empirical research that is geared toward enabling policy makers to make informed decisions.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Maher Bio - Joseph R. Maher  </image:title>
<image:caption>Joseph R. Maher is the founder and president of Opus Bono Sacerdotii, a nonprofit organization that works to find solutions for the proper care and treatment of priests who are experiencing difficulties in their personal lives and their priestly ministry. In this capacity, Mr. Maher has worked one-on-one with many hundreds of priests, has created programming for the ongoing care and support of priests removed from public ministry, and has served as a resource for numerous U.S. Catholic bishops and for the Vatican. He has also written on topics relevant to the sexual abuse crisis in the Catholic Church. It was in his work with Opus Bono Sacerdotii that the idea for the Dulles Research Institute came about. Opus Bono’s founding theological advisor, Avery Cardinal Dulles, impressed upon Mr. Maher the importance of a scholarly component to his work so that the organization would not only respond to the abuse crisis but also contribute to finding solutions. In this new component to his work, Cardinal Dulles suggested that Mr. Maher enlist the help of theologian Albert M. Liberatore, with whom the cardinal had frequently discussed the abuse crisis. When Mr. Maher contacted Dr. Liberatore in 2017 to discuss the prospect of following through on Cardinal Dulles’ counsel, the two agreed that the most effective way to ensure the very best scholarship on the topic was to found an independent organization, and so the Dulles Research Institute was born. A graduate of Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Written Communications and Marketing, Mr. Maher enjoyed a successful career as a business leader prior to founding Opus Bono Sacerdotii, and later the Dulles Research Institute. As CFO of an LA-based national multimedia communications corporation, Mr. Maher lead the company’s global growth and expansion into the founding of subsidiary companies in Europe, Latin America, and Canada. As CEO of a Detroit-based financial systems analysis and improvement company, he worked to improve Fortune 500 companies like General Motors, Ford, Daimler Chrysler, and Consumers Energy. And as founder and CEO of Christopher Raphael Marketing Design in Los Angeles, he was responsible for the production of a mass-market, fully interactive 3D multimedia tour for the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, and for the development of landmark e-commerce applications and state-of-the-art interactive learning programs for mass-market distribution. Always active in the world of media, Mr. Maher has written and directed TV commercials, in-house promotional films for General Motors, and the feature film Leonie!. He also served as executive producer for the largest live concert event ever held on American soil. A committed Catholic, Mr. Maher and his wife helped found the Ventura/LA North Chapter of Legatus in California, which is an international organization of Catholic CEOs. They are distinguished as a Papal Knight and Papal Lady in the Middle Atlantic Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem. At the Dulles Research Institute, Mr. Maher contributes insights gained through more than a decade-and-a-half of working in a unique role with clergy involved in the sexual abuse crisis. In addition, Mr. Maher serves as a vital link between the original research being carried out by the Dulles Research Institute and the clientele of Opus Bono Sacerdotii. In this way, Mr. Maher helps to fulfill Opus Bono’s mission of finding solutions while helping to fulfill the DRI’s mission by providing access to a valuable and elusive research population.</image:caption>
